07.08.2024 - Send a young refugee a message of hope
Dear supporter,
We’re appalled by the abhorrent far-right riots over the past week. These events are deeply racist and Islamophobic, and are an assault on our society – we remain concerned about the further round of ‘demonstrations’ announced for this evening.
But we also need to be clear that these events aren’t happening in a vacuum. They come after years of demonisation and dehumanisation of displaced people, Muslims, and other minorities by the press and politicians. You can read our full statement here.
This violence is also terrifying for the young refugees and asylum seekers we work with.
Our team are working hard to ensure that they feel supported and safe – but with recent attacks on hotels and minorities in the street, it’s an incredibly frightening time.
We know that the vast majority of the country rejects the shameful recent far-right riots. You can join us in making our young people feel welcomed in the UK by sending them a message of hope.
Click here to write your comment, and help our young people feel that they’re not alone.
As an organisation led by Jewish values and history, including our own refugee experience in the UK, we know all too well about where far-right rhetoric leads – and how important it is to present a strong, compassionate counter-narrative.
Stand with us today, and let young people know that the far-right’s division and intimidation does not represent our country.
Best wishes,
The HIAS+JCORE team
