What will taking part involve?

You’ll attend a total of five sessions – three online, and two in-person. By signing up, you’ll meet likeminded students from across the country, all committed to building a better future for refugees.

And we’re saving the best until last: all participants who complete the programme will be invited to our graduation celebration event in London (May 2026).

What will the sessions cover?

You’ll learn about:

  • The facts behind the rhetoric and the realities for people seeking asylum in the UK
  • What it means to be an asylum seeker and refugee
  • How support for displaced people connects to Jewish values, teaching, and experience
  • How to advocate effectively for refugee rights – and the change we need to see
  • Effective ways to mobilise your university friends to get involved with Refugee Shabbat and Refugee Week

Throughout you’ll hear from a range of expert external speakers and be supported by HIAS+JCORE’s dedicated staff team. We’ll also support you to build your own Refugee Shabbat 2026 project.

We appreciate that many students are balancing university deadlines, jobs and other volunteering, and personal commitments. However, this course will be most beneficial if you are able to attend all of the sessions.

With that, participants are still able to sign-up and graduate if there is one session that they are unable to attend. In this case, our team will help you catch up with what the session covered, and you will need to perform any tasks given to participants.

Not only will you learn more about refugee issues, connecting your Jewish identity to support for displaced people – you’ll also pick up valuable skills and help enhance your CV. Whether you’re interested in a career in advocacy, communications, project management or community engagement – or you simply want to give back – this is a great opportunity to boost your experience.
