Our statement on the Government’s plans to end the trial 56-day ‘move-on’ period for most new refugees:
“We’re deeply disappointed that the Government is halving the 56-day ‘move-on period’ for most new refugees. This decision does not give people sufficient time to rebuild their lives, and will likely force many into destitution and homelessness.
With the far-right on the rise and hostility to refugees spreading, it’s crucial that our political leaders show responsibility, solidarity, and back policies which empower integration. Reducing the ‘move-on period’ to 28 days can only undermine that goal.
The politics of division and hate may urge us to turn our backs on those in need, but Leviticus commands us not to stand idly by while our neighbours suffer. We need the Government to urgently rethink this move – those seeking safety here deserve far better.”
