A tribute to Dr Richard Stone

A tribute to Dr Richard Stone

The HIAS+JCORE team was deeply saddened to learn this week that our former Chair Dr Richard Stone has died. Richard was a huge figure in work to tackle racism in Britain and played a pivotal role in bringing together Jewish and Muslim communities here.

As Chair, we will remember Richard not only for his passion and commitment to fighting injustice, but also for his incredible warmth and generosity. Richard was a truly remarkable man, and we know that his work will continue to resonate for a long time.

Our thoughts are with all of Richard’s family and friends.

In tribute to Richard, our Honorary President, Dr Edie Friedman, who worked with him for many years as Executive Director of JCORE, said:

“A man of immense charm, warmth and generosity which belied his steely, consistent passion and commitment to social justice. These attributes so defined the man. Richard so understood the injustices that damaged the lives of so many, be it discrimination against Muslims, endemic racism affecting Black communities or poor housing affecting the health of his patients. Not only did he direct his energy to doing something practical to decrease these injustices, but he was a visionary. Richard saw the need to bring communities together, knowing that conflict in the Middle East would affect relations between Muslims and Jews here in the UK – so prescient given what is happening today.”
