We must celebrate the fact that Britain’s religious groups can peacefully gather and publicly practise their faith

The fact that Britain’s many religious groups can peacefully gather and publicly practise their faith should be celebrated. Our own community’s Chanukah celebrations are just one of many such events that reflect this country’s rich diversity.

At a time of rising antisemitism, Islamophobia, and other hate crimes, they are also an important reminder: the UK only thrives when people feel that they belong.

Nick Timothy MP’s recent remarks are therefore deeply troubling. His decision to single out British Muslims – when many already feel maligned – is unacceptable and will only increase polarisation.

But it is important to stress that these comments did not emerge in isolation. Instead, they are emblematic of a wider rise in the politics of division: we are alarmed that they have been echoed by other political leaders this week.

It is right that the Government has condemned such remarks. But now, more than ever, we need our leaders to match words with action, and commit to policies that ensure all feel welcome and safe.
