Not Only for Ourselves is a fascinating new book telling the story of the Jewish Council for Racial Equality (JCORE), founded in Leeds by Dr Edie Friedman in 1976.
Written by historian Dr Joseph Finlay, it explores how the British Jewish community has responded to issues of race relations, racism and immigration. Throughout it shows how JCORE forged a new path of Jewish social action and anti-racism, building the platform which allows HIAS+JCORE to thrive today.
In the process it discusses the links and differences between antisemitism and other forms of racism; the history of British immigration policy and refugee activism; examples of Black, Asian and Jewish co-operation; and the changing face of government policy on race, multiculturalism and migration since the 1970s.
It is a significant and necessary intervention in a field that continues to make headlines.
"JCORE has consistently shown a high level of energy and commitment... I welcome this book which records the history of a small but important organisation."Lord Alf Dubs
"This book is fascinating... it doesn't just chart the Jewish Community’s work in those areas,Alex Sobel MP
but also describes the societal changes over the last 50 years."
