05.10.2023 - Chag Succot Sameach from HIAS+JCORE

Dear Friends,

Sitting in our Succahs this week, we naturally reflect on our own Jewish refugee history and experience – and are reminded of our responsibility to support those seeking sanctuary and permanent shelter today.

In the run up to Succot, I was delighted to be invited by the Council of Christians and Jews to share my reflections on the meaning of the festival. In my piece, I argue that Succot, as a festival of migration, is a vital time of year to create a positive narrative around those leaving their home country. You can read my full blog on their website. 

Throughout this week, we’ve been proud to share a series of Succot videos from Rabbis, showing support for refugees and asylum seekers. The videos feature Rabbis from five denominations – we’re really pleased and encouraged to see voices from across the Jewish community speaking out for those seeking sanctuary here.

In the run-up to festival, we were deeply saddened and alarmed by the Home Secretary’s speech on the Refugee Convention. Succot provides a great opportunity to be positive about the contribution refugees can make to our society – and reflect about the need to support those fleeing persecution, discrimination and destitution.
