In recent months the Home Secretary has implemented major restrictions to refugee protection. These include scrapping permanent refugee status and replacing it with 30-month temporary protection, and reforms which will lengthen routes to settlement to 20 or even 30 years.

Taking inspiration from “the Danish model”, the Home Secretary is looking to adapt a similar deterrence-based approach. Denmark’s model has been deeply controversial – critics have condemned it for increasing insecurity for refugees and weakening social cohesion.

Join us for a webinar with policy experts from Denmark and the UK to explore these developments. We will examine how these policies have been implemented in Denmark, the lived experiences for refugees in Denmark, and how this deterrence model might play out in the UK context.

You’ll hear from:

  • Professor Jens Vedsted-Hansen, Professor of Law at the University of Aarhus, Denmark.

  • Dr Mihnea Cuibus, Researcher at The Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford

  • Dorte Smed, Senior Legal Advisor at the Danish Refugee Council
